  • Travelling overland to Langkawi from KL

Most people fly from KL - it's direct and usually a lot cheaper than the train and a similar price to taking the bus. Plus the flight takes barely an hour instead of 10-12 hours overland and sea. That said there is the inevitable carbon imprint - pretty much the only downside. The train runs at night - so no scenic trip up the length of the peninsula either, but it is nice to arrive on the island by boat.

By Train from KL. You can take the train from KL Sentral Station to either Arau or Alor Star. The train leaves around 9 at night and gets in around 7 am for Alor Star and 7.40 for Arau

From Arau you'll have to grab a cab to Kuala Perlis Jetty Terminal (12 rm approx). The boat trip from Kuala Perlis to the jetty in Kuah, Langkawi takes about 1.15 hrs

From Alor Star take a taxi to Kuala Kedah Jetty Terminal (18 rm approx). The boat trip from Kuala Kedah to the jetty in Kuah, Langkawi takes about 1.15 hrs

This is a link to Malaysian Railways (KTM). You won't find Kuala Lumpur on there - it's cunningly hidden in the list as Sentral Kuala Lumpur.

By Bus from KL. Alternatively you can take a bus from KL to either Kuala Perlis or Kuala Kedah.

The buses used to leave from Puduraya bus station in Chinatown but it is under renovation at the moment and the buses are running from Bukit Jalil. Find more up to date information here.

The bus fare should be around 25 rm per person for a standard bus and about double that for a 'luxury' bus - which may just turn out to be a standard bus anyway. The agents at the ticket counters in KL are as unscrupulous as the taxi drivers and will almost definitely try to rip you off if you are a foreigner. There are dozens of agents at the bus station so it's worth shopping around.

    Climate in Langkawi

    langkawi tree cotton

Langkawi is situated just 6 degrees north of the equator and has a humid maritime tropical climate that varies little throughout the year. Monsoon season used to be between June and October, but nowadays weather patterns are a little less predictable.

Even during monsoon season it may only rain for half an hour or so, before the skies become clear again, so if you visit during that period it is unlikely that you will spend your holidays stuck inside all day watching the rain fall. You are much more likely to need sunglasses, a sun hat and sun-block than an umbrella. Average temperatures are between 25 and 35 Celcius. Mosquitoes are present, though malaria isn't really an issue.
